Starting on 1 June 2025, there will be three direct flights a week between Bilbao Airport and Newark Airport, New Jersey.
The move is a part of huge international expansion by United Airlines, with the company adding eight new cities to its transcontinental network.
Plans to bring a direct, transatlantic flight from the USA to Bilbao stretch back over 20 years, since the new Bilbao Airport was opened in 2000. The city’s mayor, Jose Mari Aburto, hailed the news, saying it was “a very powerful, historic milestone in terms of economic development”.
Initially the route will be open from June to September, with a view to making it a year-long connection. Flights from Bilbao will take off on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 12:30 CET and land in Newark at 15:00 local time. The return flight will be on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing New York at 21:15 local time and landing in Bilbao at 10:45 CET the following day.
Although there has been no official announcement on prices, a look at prices on Skyscanner suggests return flights will cost around €1,000.
